Ahoy Matey! again t’ The Rich Geek! Arr! Today be Talk Like A Pirate Day an’ ye can bet that all o’ us ‘ere at Millionaire Geeks be celebratin’!
Every now and then, some visionary individuals come along with a concept that is so original and so revolutionary that your immediate reaction is: ”Those individuals should be on medication.”
As geek entrepreneurs we are always looking for creative and fun ways to make money. For us, it’s even better if that method happens to be geeky! Today I want to tell you about two geeks, John Baur and Mark Summers. They may not be breaking the bank with their idea but I bet you are kicking yourself for not thinking of it first: Talk Like a Pirate Day. As the name suggests, on this is day we all talk like pirates! Is that a great idea, or what? There are so many practical benefits that I can’t even begin to list them all.
Baur and Summers came up with this idea a few years ago. They were playing racquetball, and, as so often happens, they began talking like pirates. And then it struck them: Why not have a day when EVERYBODY talks like a pirate? They chose the day to be Sept. 19, which happens to be Summers’ ex-wife’s birthday.
Since then, Baur and Summers have made a near-superhuman effort to promote Talk Like a Pirate Day. As they put it “We’ve been spreading the word by talkin’ like pirates every September 19th….except for a couple of years when we forgot.”. There’s also an official website.
And yet, despite their best efforts, much of the nation is still unaware of Talk Like a Pirate Day. That’s why it is up to us geeks to help everyone discover this legendary holiday!
So we at Millionaire Geeks have decided to throw our full support behind Talk Like a Pirate Day. To help promote this important cause, I am telling all of you subscribers out there to tell everyone you know using whatever means possible. That can even include making your friends walk the plank! YAR! In previous years the efforts of other brave pirate pioneers have seen to it that even certain celebrities observe this holiday. Just take a look at this transcript of a recent White House press conference:
REPORTER: Mr. President. Could you please explain your foreign policy?
PRESIDENT BUSH: Arrrrr!
To prepare for Talk Like a Pirate Day, you should practice incorporating pirate terminology into your everyday speech. For example, let’s consider a typical conversation between us here at Millionaire Geeks:
MR.J: Hi. Drake.
DRAKE: Hi, Mr.J. Have you had a chance to look at the blog lately?
MR.J: Yes, and I love that new post that Kadin made about Talk Like A Pirate Day!
DRAKE: I agree.
Now let’s see how this same conversation would sound on Talk Like a Pirate Day:
MR.J: Avast, matey.
DRAKE: Avast Mr.J. Have ye had a chance t’ eyeball th’ blog lately?
MR.J: Aye, yes, and Me lo’e that new post that Kadin made about Talk Like A Pirate Day, shiver me timbers!
DRAKE: Arrrrr!
As you can see, talking like a pirate will make even the most average conversation seem like an adventure. So join the movement! Today, do not answer the phone with ”hello.” Answer the phone with ”Ahoy me hearty!” If the caller objects that he is not a hearty, inform him that he is a scurvy dog (or, if the caller is female, a scurvy lass) who will be walking the plank off the poop deck and winding up in Davy Jones’ locker!
This really is a great idea. So join us, you have the buckles, darn it! Don’t be afraid to swash them! Let’s make this into a grass-roots movement that sweeps the nation. I truly think this idea could bring us, as a nation, closer together.
But not TOO much closer. Some of us will have swords!
